The move-out checklist landlords use

What inspections usually look at first, and how to give yourself the best chance of your full deposit back.

· 1 min read

A move-out inspection compares the home with how it was when you moved in. Check your lease for any cleaning terms, then work through the places inspections most often look at.

Kitchen

  • Inside the oven, including the racks and the glass.
  • Inside the fridge and freezer, defrosted and dry.
  • Cabinets and drawers, inside and out.
  • Stovetop, range hood and filter.

Bathrooms

  • Limescale on faucets, showerheads and glass.
  • Grout and caulk.
  • Toilet, including the base and behind it.

Every room

  • Walls: scuffs and marks wiped where the paint allows.
  • Baseboards, door frames and switches.
  • Windows, sills and tracks.
  • Floors, last of all.

Before you hand back the keys

Take dated photos of every room once it is clean. If anything is questioned later, you have a record.
