6 cleaning mistakes that make more work
Why paper towels spread dust, and the order that saves you an hour.

Most extra cleaning time doesn't come from dirt. It comes from the order you clean in and the tools you reach for. Here are six habits we see all the time, and what to do instead.
1. Cleaning bottom to top
Dust falls. Wipe shelves and surfaces first and do the floors last, or you will vacuum twice.
2. Paper towels on dusty surfaces
Dry paper towels push dust around and leave lint behind. A slightly damp microfiber cloth picks it up and holds on to it.
3. Spraying straight onto screens and wood
Spray the cloth, not the surface. It's gentler on electronics and finishes, and you use less product.
4. Not letting cleaner sit
Most bathroom and kitchen cleaners need a minute or two on the surface to work. Spray, move on to the next thing, then come back and wipe.
5. One cloth for everything
Keep separate cloths for the bathroom and the kitchen. Different colors make it easy.
6. Leaving the tough jobs for one big day
A quick weekly wipe of the stovetop and shower glass stops buildup before it needs scrubbing. Little and often beats one long afternoon.
